Safety of toys – Chemical, mechanical and physical properties

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Safety of toys – Chemical, mechanical and physical properties Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

To ensure that children's toys are safe to use, a wide range of rules and regulations are in place. Among the most comprehensive frameworks is the Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC), supplemented by harmonized standards. The directive sets requirements for toy safety, including chemicals, flammability, general safety, and electrical safety.

Purpose/Benefit:

All toys sold within the EU must bear the CE mark. To achieve this, the toy must meet the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive. The products are tested according to harmonized standards to ensure that these requirements are met.

We perform testing of toys in accordance with the SS-EN 71 series, the REACH Regulation, the RoHS Directive, and other relevant regulations.

The requirements in the standards vary depending on which age group the toy is intended for and what type of toy it is.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Accredited testing according to the SS-EN 71 series and assessments according to the REACH Regulation and RoHS Directive

We offer accredited testing according to the following standards:

  • SS-EN 71-1 – Mechanical and physical properties
Tests the toy’s safety against mechanical hazards such as small parts, sharp edges, and durability during normal use.
  • SS-EN 71-2 – Flammability
Evaluates the toy’s flammability characteristics to minimize the risk of the product igniting easily or contributing to a fire.
  • SS-EN 71-3 – Migration of certain elements
Tests whether heavy metals and other regulated substances migrate from the toy in hazardous amounts when in contact with saliva, sweat, or gastric acid.

In addition to these accredited tests, we also offer assessments and analyses to ensure compliance with:

  • REACH Regulation
    Lead and cadmium.
  • RoHS Directive
Assesses whether electrical and electronic toys meet the requirements for restricting hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium.

These services are performed according to harmonized standards to ensure that products meet all applicable safety requirements within the EU.

Our operations include both accredited and non-accredited testing methods. The scope of accreditation is available upon request – please contact us for more information.

EGOLF Reaction to Fire 2026

Brandteknik Reaction to Fire

There are many factors which may affect the results of a reaction-to-fire test. Due to the very labour intensive nature off fire testing, many of the factors are operator dependent. The training, experience and attitude of the operator are crucial to eliminate such variables that may significantly affect the degree of uncertainty of measurements

In order to reach common interpretations and minimize the operator generated uncertainties, EGOLF (European Group of Organisations for Fire testing, inspection and certification), is arranging harmonization courses in various EN standards related to reaction-to-fire. These test methods are included in the fire classification of construction products and building elements, EN 13501-1.

The course is open for both EGOLF and non-EGOLF members.

The course is held in English.

The course contains theoretical information and practical tasks in the laboratory of the following methods:

  • Non-combustibility, EN ISO 1182
  • Determination of gross heat of combustion (calorimetric value), EN ISO 1716
  • Building products, excluding floorings, exposed to thermal attack by a single burning item (SBI), EN 13823
  • Ignitability of construction products exposed to direct impingement of flame - Part 2, Testing with a single flame, EN ISO 11925-2
  • Determination of the burning behavior of flooring products using a radiant heat source, EN ISO 9239-1

September/October 2026

The course week will start monday September 28 at 13.00 and end Friday October 2 at 15.00. For more details regarding start time for each day please see the programme. The programme is preliminary and changes may occur.

Petra and her colleagues are testing the products of the future

Picture of employee Petra Elvestad

At RISE in Borås, Petra Elvestad works as an engineer specializing in EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) – a field that ensures technology functions properly in environments affected by electromagnetic interference. Here, innovation meets societal benefit in a daily work life where variety, learning, and collaboration are key.

Petra is part of a team that tests industrial products in a lab environment to examine how they are affected by - and themselves affect - their electromagnetic surroundings. The tests cover both emissions - how much electromagnetic interference the product emits - and immunity - how much interference the product can withstand. The goal is to ensure the product operates reliably and without issues in real-world conditions.

– It’s a very varied job, with a good mix of practical, administrative, and social elements. We work with many different clients, test a wide range of products, and follow many different standards. You’re never done learning, and if you enjoy challenges, this is a great role.

Work with a clear impact

RISE EMC operations are accredited, meaning testing is conducted according to international standards and with high credibility. For Petra, this is an important aspect of the work.

– The fact that we perform accredited testing makes the work feel serious, structured, and results-oriented, which is a key motivator for me. We have a steady flow of assignments, and I appreciate that clients come to us because we offer something they truly need.

It’s not just the technology and lab environments that are top-notch – the team’s expertise is too.

– We have deep expertise in EMC here at RISE – it’s actually quite unique. There’s also a great mix of new colleagues and those with more experience, and that blend allows us to learn a lot from each other and continuously grow.

Collaboration that makes the work possible

Petra highlights the collaboration with colleagues as one of the greatest advantages of working at RISE.

– I’ve never had colleagues as great as the ones I have at RISE. There’s a humble, open atmosphere, and an incredible willingness to collaborate and help each other. That’s essential, because the things we work on are so complex. It’s incredibly fortunate that this foundation exists - it’s a big reason why we’re able to do such a great job together.

Testing cement and concrete – from the laboratory to the field

crack in concrete

When it comes to building materials, quality, safety, and sustainability are crucial. Cement is the heart of concrete, and together with sand, aggregate, and other additives, it forms the basis of construction projects such as bridges, roads, and buildings. The properties of both cement and concrete affect both longevity and safety. That is why RISE offers testing and chemical analysis of both cement and concrete.

“We test both cement and concrete in detail to ensure that they perform optimally in various construction projects and meet performance and safety requirements. This involves everything from strength and chemical analyses to how the material develops over time,” says Katarina Malaga, Business Development Manager for Sustainable Construction at RISE.

At RISE laboratories, experts carry out analyses that test chemical composition, fresh properties, strength, durability, heat development, and crack formation. This makes it possible to identify and prevent risks, while ensuring that the materials meet requirements for strength and long service life.

From laboratory to field testing

"Field testing provides us with insights that laboratory tests cannot always provide. We can see how materials behave under real conditions – from weather exposure to stress – which is crucial for buildings and infrastructure to last over time," says Katarina Malaga.

Through careful testing and trialing, RISE is an important partner for construction companies, architects, and material manufacturers. The results reduce risks, prevent problems, and help make buildings and infrastructure both sustainable and safe.

“Our job is to ensure that cement and concrete meet all requirements for quality, performance, and safety. Being able to test and evaluate materials at all levels—from the laboratory to the field—is a fundamental part of our work,” says Katarina Malaga.
