Testing of operating forces for windows and doors at RISE

A window or door is expected to have several functions and properties. One property is to be able to operate, that is, to open and close a door or window without obstacles or excessive resistance. In normal operation but especially in an emergency situation, this is an important property. Not least in light of accessibility.

Testing according to harmonized standards

RISE offers accredited testing of operating forces for windows and doors according to current European standards.

RISE performs tests in accordance with:

  • SS-EN 12046-1:2020 – Windows and doors – Operating forces – Test methods – Part 1: Windows
  • SS-EN 12046-2:2025 – Operating forces – Test method – Part 2: Doors

These standards specify how to measure the forces required to operate a product, for example when opening, closing, locking and unlocking.

What does the test involve?

When testing operating forces, how much force is needed to use the product in practice is analysed. For windows, this may include, for example:

  • Opening force (starting force and continued movement)
  • Closing force
  • Operation of fittings, e.g. handles and espagnolette

For doors, the testing includes:

  • Force to open and close the door leaf
  • Forces to activate the locks and the pushbuttons
  • Any forces connected to door closers or automatic functions

The testing takes place under controlled conditions and follows standardized procedures to ensure comparable and reliable results.

Why is testing operating forces important?

Requirements for actuating forces are closely linked to several important characteristics:

  • Accessibility – Products should be usable by people with varying physical abilities
  • Ergonomics – Reasonable forces reduce strain and increase comfort
  • Function and quality – Excessive or varying forces may indicate deficiencies in design or assembly
  • Regulatory compliance – Basis for CE marking, product documentation and project-specific requirements

When is testing needed?

Testing of actuation forces is relevant at several stages:

  • In product development and design optimization
  • As part of type testing or certification
  • For verification against requirements in standards, procurements or projects
  • In investigations of functional problems in existing products

Delivery

The results are reported in a written report that describes how the test item has performed against the applicable classification standard for the essential characteristic.

The report can also be used as a basis for a compiled ITT report and/or as a basis for the manufacturer's declaration of performance for CE marking.

RISE – your partner for independent testing

RISE has extensive experience in testing construction products and offers both standardized tests and customized testing packages based on customer needs. The results are documented in clear test reports that can be used for technical documentation, marketing and regulatory requirements.
