Battery Researcher with focus on Cell Modelling at SEEL

About SEEL
SEEL, Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory, is a collaboration between Chalmers and RISE for research and development in electromobility. We operate three state-of-the-art test facilities in Gothenburg, Nykvarn, and Borås. Our mission is to accelerate the development of electrified transportation by creating an efficient knowledge platform where industry and research meet. We offer testing services for the automotive, aerospace, and maritime industries – from component level to complete systems – and execute advanced electromobility research.

We are in a scaling-up phase and there are around 35 dedicated employees with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. The open position is located at SEEL in Gothenburg, where most of your colleagues work, but you will also support our other office in Nykvarn. You can read more about us here: SEEL Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory

The role is part of the SEEL Research team and reports to the Research Director. The team currently includes two senior battery researchers and one senior researcher specializing in electric machines. The battery researchers collaborate closely with the Energy Storage Testing team.

The role
You will be responsible for executing battery cell modelling and simulations in research projects, industrial assignments, and internal method development. A key responsibility is to further develop SEEL’s capabilities in modelling and simulation.

In this role, you will use data from cell cycling and physical experiments to parameterize physics-based models, and conduct simulation of battery cells for performance and degradation analysis using various models. You will employ applicable cell models to design advanced cycling protocols—such as accelerated aging tests—and utilize simulation results to guide and complement physical cell testing.

The work also includes development of material and degradation models, and new parametrization procedures. In addition, you will work closely with experimental researchers and participate in some laboratory activities. You will disseminate scientific findings through journal publications and internal and external reports, as well as present results at scientific conferences and meetings while engaging with academic and industrial partners.

The role includes monthly travel within Sweden and occasional international trips, mainly within Europe.

Who are you?
You are expected to work proactively and independently while maintaining a strong team-oriented mindset when collaborating with colleagues in multidisciplinary projects. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to clearly present and explain complex results to audiences with diverse technical backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

·        Doctoral degree in a relevant field.

·        Experience with physics-based electrochemical modelling.

·        Excellent spoken and written English.

Meritorious Qualifications

·        Experience with development and implementation of aging models.

·        Experience with electrochemistry or material science, or a strong willingness to learn these topics.

·        Experience thermal modelling, battery management systems (BMS), and/or state estimation.

Are we a good match?
At SEEL, you will thrive in a setting that offers both autonomy and meaningful responsibility, supported by senior colleagues who are committed to your development. You’ll work closely with partners from both industry and academia, giving you unique insights into cutting edge battery research and the opportunity to shape, influence, and accelerate our scientific direction. Here, your work contributes directly to the broader transition toward sustainability and electrification in Sweden and across Europe.

Welcome with your application!
If you are interested and want to know more you are welcome to contact Research Director at SEEL, Martin Gustavsson +46 10 228 44 21. The application deadline is February 23. Apply without cover letter. Selection and interviews will take place continuously during and after the application period.
