Fire requirements on marine equipment – The Marine Directive

RISE is Notified Body for the European Marine Equipment Directive, 2014/90/EU. We know how to meet ship fire requirements and help you with certification and wheel mark materials and products.

Do you want to test and certify marine products? RISE has extensive experience in fire testing of materials and products according to the IMO 2010 FTP Code. We are Notified Body and certify products according to the Marine Directive. Testing (type-approval) and certification are mandatory measures to wheel mark a marine product.

How does the Marine Directive affect fire requirements on ships?

The Marine Directive imposes fire requirements on all products and materials mounted on board EU ships. The 2014/90/EU directive applies from 18 September 2016 and replaced 96/98/EC. The Marine Directive harmonises fire requirements to ensure that quality, safety, and environmental consequences are properly and methodically evaluated for marine equipment on EU-based ships.

What are the fire requirements for products installed on ships?

The fire requirements are presented in the Implementing Regulation (equipment list). All fire requirements for products and materials, which RISE can test and certify, are described in the IMO 2010 FTP Code.

What is meant by wheel-mark and certification of products and materials?

The certification allows the manufacturer to type-approve the product and label it with the wheel mark, RISE is Notified Body for the assessment and verification (certification) of marine equipment for the European market.

How does the certification process work?

In most cases, a type of examination (fire test) of the product is required. This is confirmed by issuing an EC Type Examination Certificate (a Module B certificate). To obtain the right to label the product, a Notified Body must monitor the continuous production, according to one of the modules listed in the Marine Directive. Even this is confirmed by a certificate, for instance, an EC Production-Quality Assurance System Certificate (also known as a Module D certificate). For all materials and structures involving fire requirements, such as surface layers, floors, furniture, bulkheads and decks, Module B is required for the product and Module D for the production.
