Calibration of GNSS Equipment for Accurate Time and Frequency

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of GNSS Equipment for Accurate Time and Frequency Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

By calibrating GNSS receiver equipment, time and frequency obtained from GNSS (e.g. GPS and Galileo) become both traceable and accurate, which is a requirement in many industries. RISE calibrates equipment both in our laboratory and on-site at the customer, in accordance with the CIPM-MRA, fulfilling global requirements for traceability.

Purpose/Benefit:

Time from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS, such as the American GPS and the European Galileo) is easily accessible and precise. Signals in space rarely deviate more than a few nanoseconds from the global time scale UTC.

On the ground, however, the situation is different. Several factors affect the accuracy of time from when it leaves the satellite constellation until it reaches the point of use. Delays in the atmosphere and ionosphere can to some extent be handled at the system level, but local effects—such as signal reflections in the receiver antenna’s surroundings and systematic delays in the antenna, antenna cable, receiver, and the user’s own time distribution system—must be managed through local comparisons against an accurate reference, i.e. calibration. A typical delay in cabling is 5 ns per meter of signal cable.

Frequency transfer via GNSS is less sensitive to local delays, but the equipment must still be calibrated to be considered traceable.
To obtain time from GNSS, a user may employ a GNSS-disciplined oscillator that generates a local signal synchronized and syntonized to a GNSS time scale. Alternatively, the user may connect a time source to a GNSS receiver for time transfer, which compares the user’s time against GNSS time.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The need for calibration depends on the requirements of the specific application. Regular calibration of individual installations is recommended when the requirements for relative frequency accuracy are better than 10⁻¹² over a day. For time, regular calibration is recommended when accuracy requirements are better than 100 ns.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

RISE offers calibration of GNSS-disciplined oscillators and GNSS receivers intended for timekeeping. Calibration can be performed either at the customer’s site or in RISE laboratories, depending on the customer’s needs and the specific conditions of the installation.

Delivery is carried out according to agreement with the customer.

Distribution of Swedish local time via telephone

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Fröken Ur Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

With ‘Fröken Ur,’ (Miss Time) you get the correct Swedish time read directly over the phone. You can reach 'Fröken Ur', from Sweden, at the phone number 90 510. It costs the same as a regular phone call.

Purpose/Benefit:

'Fröken Ur’ has been a reliable source of accurate Swedish local time for over 90 years. The service is aimed at both the general public and professional users who need access to accurate time and frequency.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

You can reach the service from Sweden at the phone number 90 510. From abroad, you can reach the service via +46 33 90 510.

The current Swedish local time is announced every ten seconds, followed by a beep for precise time indication. The date and year are announced once per minute. The call is terminated after 90 seconds.

The service is directly connected to the Swedish official time scale UTC(SP), which is maintained by RISE using atomic clocks

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The service can be considered an acoustic 0.1 PPS signal (PPS = pulse per second) with interleaved time indication. The time indicated is based on UTC(SP), which is traceable to UTC and can be used for, for example, calibration of stopwatches. Note that there may be requirements for a user method that describes execution and measurement uncertainty calculation approved by the supervisory authority or equivalent, and that the end user is responsible for this. Calibration against 'Fröken Ur' results in higher measurement uncertainty than equivalent calibration performed in the national metrology institute’s calibration lab.

Any delay and variance in the time indication are dominated by effects from the telephone network. These effects are beyond RISE’s control and should be considered by the end user in cases where these uncertainties may be significant for the application.

The service is sometimes used for marketing purposes for RISE. This means that the spoken messages may periodically differ from the normal ones. Neither the functionality of the service nor the accuracy of the time indication is affected by this

Calibration and measurement of objects in a CMM at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration and measurement in a CMM Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology offers calibration and measurements of objects in a coordinate measuring machine.

Purpose/Benefit:

The National Laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and spreading metrological competence and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a National Laboratory fulfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

As industrial products rise in complexity the reference objects needed follow the same trend. This means that everything from small holes with dimensions in the µm-level to custom made standards with complex form need to be measured with metrological traceability and low measurement uncertainty. This is not always achievable in traditional measuring machines.

The National Laboratory for Length and Dimensional Metrology is in possession of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for this purpose. Our CMM is equipped with a multisensory system capable of both optical and tactile measurements. This enables precise geometry measurements in our laboratory of both hard and soft materials.

Which approach is suitable for measuring is unique for each objects and mainly depend on the quality of the object in question and it’s intended use. This also means that the measurement uncertainty that is achievable is unique for the object, but in general measurement result in an expanded measurement uncertainty on the µm-level

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The calibration results are reported in a report or digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English which states that the measurement or calibration was performed at a National Laboratory.
