Sweden has long held a strong position in technological innovation and often tops international rankings. The work in this project aimed to highlight aspects that are important to consider in order to identify and work with areas of technology that are of strategic importance to Sweden.
Several of the emerging technologies, individually or collectively, have the potential to transform society in ways that are difficult to imagine today. Never before in history has the world faced so many simultaneous breakthroughs in transformative technologies. Countries that are able to navigate this change will have a significant competitive advantage.
The work carried out in 2024 included reviewing written material, holding discussions and workshops with representatives from industry, academia and government agencies, and gathering knowledge from experts at RISE. The results are compiled in a report. The report aims to highlight the current situation and future prospects in relation to challenging technological developments from a Swedish perspective. We begin the report with some summary insights and recommendations on how Sweden as a country can strengthen its ability to navigate this change.
Identifying areas that are of strategic importance to Sweden is an important piece of the puzzle. At the same time, it is equally important that there is room for a certain degree of flexibility over time and that the work is seen as a continuous process based on private-public collaboration.
As part of the project, RISE produced a status report on the ten technology areas that the European Commission identified in autumn 2023 as critical to the economic security of the Union. This report should be read in light of the fact that it was produced in June 2024.
