SCARCE - Sustainable Choice of Action for a Recovered water acCEss

The overall aim of the project is to provide decision support for evaluating various water saving measures in areas of water scarcity. A number of different measures are studied and compared based on e.g. cost effectiveness and water saving potential to provide guidance and support and enable informed decisions on sustainable water usage.

Aim

The overall aim of the project is to provide decision support for guidance and prioritization on measures aimed at improving the water balance in areas with water shortage.

Challenge

In recent years, parts of Sweden have suffered from water shortage. The use of water in these areas needs to adapt to the available water resources for a long-term sustainable situation. A number of different measures aimed at improving the water balance in areas with water shortages are identified; however, there are no decision support to provide guidance on the pros and cons of the different measures.  This is needed to enable informed decisions on water measures.

Solution

A generic decision support model to evaluate various measures in areas of water scarcity is developed within the project. Measures’ cost effectiveness, water saving potential and feasibility are studied along with their impacts on society and the environment.

Effect

The project will provide decision support for a safe and secure water usage for areas of water scarcity which can guide the work within strategic investment decisions, pricing considerations, feasibility and environmental impact. The results can increase the awareness and give governance to decision-makers on water management and how to steer towards a future society that is able to grow sustainably.
