Forestry byproducts the aviation fuel of the future

Air traffic is responsible for releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide. In collaboration with the aerospace industry, researchers are currently developing fossil-free fuels from Swedish forests.

Story

We need to change our behaviour to save the climate

If we are to achieve the Swedish Government’s environmental and climate goals we must reduce our consumption of natural resources and develop fossil-free fuels. These two measures must go hand in hand and one of the most important challenges facing us today is to change our behaviour.

The future of refineries is green

Today, with its boundless utility, we use biomass as a raw material in the manufacture of everything from paints and toothpaste to electricity and fuel for fossile free aviation. RISE Processum develops concepts for the refineries of the future, with the motto, ‘anything that can be done by oil can be done better by the forest’.

New tech and business models for fossil-free aviation

Aviation accounts for around five per cent of Sweden’s total carbon dioxide emissions. The Swedish aviation strategy states that aviation shall contribute to the goal of Sweden becoming one of the world’s first fossil-free welfare states. To achieve this requires both technical and business innovation, and RISE is currently pursuing several research projects that in various ways contribute to the changeover to fossil-free aviation.
