Physical and chemical characterizations of materials and coatings for marine environment

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Characterization of materials and coatings Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The marine environment is harsh and demanding for materials and coatings long time performance. Crack propagation and degradation might induce corrosion and attachment of marine biofouling. By performing stability studies including careful characterizations material design and coating formulations could be optimized, improving performance and reducing need for maintenance. Analysis is also a valuable tool during troubleshooting making it possible to determine failure mechanism.

Purpose/Benefit:

Understanding how ingredients and process parameters control materials and coatings surface structure after applying.  Analysis of internal structure and compartmentalization of components by performing a cross-sectional analysis is possible. Parameters that could be assessed include film thickness, adhesion, crack propagation, dispersity and aggregation, wettability, chemical composition and structure on both surface and cross-sections, mechanical properties to mention a few.

Materials and formulations with improved performance in marine environment. Understanding why materials and coatings failed in the marine environment.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Pristine material or coatings is examined prior to exposure under accelerated conditions in the laboratory or exposed in the field. At certain time points the sample is withdrawn and eventual changes in material properties are reassessed. Exposure conditions and suitable characterization method depends on aim with the analysis and is decided before start of study. Usually no sample preparation is needed but for cross-sectional analysis epoxy-embedding might be needed.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The main delivery will be a written report containing description of method, results and eventual conclusions.

Delivery time:

Delivery time depends on study design including complexity and immersion conditions.

Algal resistance – Testing of the algal growth resistance of surfaces

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Algal resistance test Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Test of the resistance of different surfaces, materials and products to growth of algae is performed according to ASTM D5589 or based on this method but adapted to the task and application of the commissioner.

Purpose/Benefit:

The purpose of this service is to help the commissioner in developing different materials and products which are exposed to environments where algae are common. In addition to the algal resistance test, we can help with pretreatment (leaching, ageing etc.), additional evaluation of the material after test, as well as problem solving.

This method can help in evaluating if a product is likely going to get problems with algal growth, if a product or material can resist algal growth compared to a reference material (with or without biocide for example) or compare different materials to understand which one has the best function. Also cleaning products against algae can be tested. The results can be used by the commissioner for continued development of a product, for advertising purposes etc.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test is performed at the laboratory by spreading a mixture of different microscopic algae on the material or product. During three weeks of cultivation in light and at optimal temperature and relative air humidity conditions, the extent of growth on the test object is evaluated. The growth is compared to a suitable reference object and optically graded according to a standard scale. Sample preparation, pretreatment and ageing of test objects are performed when needed and additional evaluation can be made on material changes due to algal growth.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Results are given as an electronic RISE report. If asked for, a report on paper can be sent. The laboratory is accredited according to ISO 17025.

Delivery time:

Delivery time after agreement, normally 8 weeks after written ordering and reception of test objects. The commission may however need to be coordinated with other activities

Lignin, with its complex macromolecular structure, offers a wealth of properties that are crucial for creating innovative products. To develop processes and products, it is necessary to measure the chemical and physical properties of lignin.

Purpose/Benefit:

To fully utilize the potential of lignin, it is important to understand its chemical and physical properties. Our service focuses on carefully characterizing lignin to provide you with the information needed to select the right raw material and optimize your product development.

The properties of lignin depend largely on its chemical and molecular structure. The analysis results provide the opportunity to select the right raw material, control your process, and develop the desired products.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

By using NMR spectroscopy, we can identify and quantify the functional groups and bonding types that are crucial for the properties of lignin. This technique gives us a detailed understanding of lignin's structure, which is crucial for making informed choices in your process development.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Our 31P-NMR analysis provides a quantification of the hydroxyl groups in lignin, while the combination of 1H and C13-NMR offers insight into its bonding types. This information is valuable for adapting and improving your products and processes.

Contact us to discuss how we can help you leverage the full potential of lignin in your business. Our expertise is your resource for creating sustainable and efficient solutions.

Foam materials of forestry side-streams

SmartFoam
Diskussion at the extruder

Wood contains as much hemicellulose as cellulose fibers, and can be used to make foam materials for packaging and absorbent applications in hygiene products. The hemicellulose is extracted from side-streams in the paper mill and chemically modified to suit the final application.

Division: Division Bioeconomy

Aim and goal

To extract hemicellulose from existing side-streams of pulp production, and to chemically modify it using commercially available reactions and chemicals for suitable material properties. The hemicellulose is then extruded into foams with tailored material properties.

Challenge

The large majority of commercial foam materials are currently petroleum based. The hemicellulose present in pulp manufacturing is currently incinerated for energy recovery. We need to make better use of our forests and at the same time decrease our dependence on petroleum.

Solution

The project scientists have together with industry developed methods for extracting hemicellulose from side-streams, and utilized organic chemistry with commercially available chemicals to modify the hemicellulose to e.g. extend the chain length and to make it more water resistant. Extrusion is a scalable process suitable for continuous, large scale production of thermoplastic based materials such as foams. The concept has been proven by extruding the modified hemicellulose at kilogram scale into foam materials.

Effect

Strong foam materials with closed cells are suitable for stiff and insulating packagings, whereas soft foams with open cell structure is suitable in absorbing hygiene materials. The new materials can be used for improved packagings as well as for more sustainable hygiene products.
