Children are increasingly being driven to school by car. Through collaboration between municipalities, schools and parents, the project develops methods, tools and local solutions that make it easier and safer for more children to walk or cycle to and from school.
An increasing number of children are being driven to school by car, contributing to higher traffic volumes, less safe school environments, and fewer opportunities for daily physical activity.
This project brings together municipalities, schools, and parents to reverse this trend. Through innovative working methods, locally tailored solutions, and targeted interventions around schools, the project creates the conditions for more children to walk, cycle, or use public transport to travel to school safely and sustainably.
By the end of the project, the municipalities in Sörmland will have strengthened their capacity to promote sustainable school mobility through established collaboration between relevant municipal departments, schools, and parents. Common approaches, clearly defined responsibilities, and practical tools will support the long-term integration of sustainable school mobility into municipal operations.
More schools will have locally adapted School Travel Plans in place, while school environments will be improved through both physical measures and behavioural change initiatives. Knowledge, methods, and experiences will be systematically shared among participating municipalities and embedded in regular practice.
In the longer term, the project is expected to contribute to an increase in the number of children walking, cycling, or using public transport to school, a reduction in car traffic around schools, and safer, healthier, and more climate-friendly school journeys.
