SAGE is one of the European Commission’s major initiatives on data spaces in strategically important domains. SAGE will develop a federated, secure and interoperable data space to support stakeholders in the key areas of the Green Deal: biodiversity, climate adaptation, the circular economy and zero pollution.
SAGE will establish a fully operational Green Deal Data Space (GDDS) to improve the availability, integration and use of environmental and climate-related data across the EU. The project is being carried out in line with the Digital Europe Programme’s strategic focus on AI, cybersecurity, advanced computing and data infrastructure.
The data space will continue to exist after the SAGE project ends in early 2028. During the project, a legal entity will be established to operate, further develop and scale up the data space once it has been handed over from the project.
SAGE will give data providers “data sovereignty”: a safe and secure way to share data with others while retaining full control over how that data is used. SAGE will make it possible to combine sensitive data with open and public data, supported by semantic interoperability mechanisms and tools.
SAGE will make it easier to find and use data from a wide range of sources, such as various environmental databases, satellite data and research infrastructures, as well as participating municipalities. SAGE will also work towards interoperability with the other Common European Data Spaces in areas such as agriculture, energy and smart cities.
