Two regional trains at a station

Critical disturbances and punctuality

The primary measure used by Trafikverket regarding delays in the railway traffic is delay increment time and punctuality (at the final station). In this project, we developed supplementary concepts and metrics: delay contribution, minor delays and critical disturbances, to provide an expanded understanding of how punctuality can be improved.

The concepts of delay contribution and critical disturbances have shown good potential in previous projects for providing supplementary knowledge in the punctuality work. In this continuation project, the methods are deepened by considering supplementary information and prediction, the demonstrator is further developed to provide results that can be more easily translated into measures, and possible application to Trafikverket was investigated.

The project aimed to further develop tools and the methodology around the measurement figures for delay contributions and critical disturbances for disruptions in rail traffic. The project was a continuation of the Ståndpunkt project. The project had these overall questions:

  • How can delay contribution and critical disturbances be used at Trafikverket's follow-up to provide supplementary information on non-punctuality and its causes?
  • How can these metrics be further developed to simultaneously take into account other aspects such as weather and capacity utilization?
  • What knowledge can be gained from the work around delay contribution and critical disturbances?
