Expertise in water

In 2020, the EU Council of Ministers made a decision regarding a new Drinking Water Directive, which is being implemented in Sweden during spring 2023. The goal of the directive is to protect human health from all types of contaminants in drinking water and to improve access to clean water. 

PFAS in soil and water is a major problem in Sweden and internationally. PFAS may spread to people via the environment causing negative health effects. There are many different purification techniques to remove PFAS from the environment. To achieve a useful comparison of the methods, expertise in evaluation of purification technologies are needed.

Through better water management many industries can not only reduce their environmental impact and meet societal demands for clean water, but also improve process performance and ultimately reduce costs. Water management is a key part of climate change resilience for a sustainable industry.

UVF (Ultraviolet Fluorescence Analysis) is a non-contact method for the detection of biological materials, such as oil. RISE develops UVF systems that are adapted to challenging applications.

Policy makers within both the public and private sectors regularly make decisions regarding management of drinking water, storm water and wastewater. When alternatives for example exploration, expansion, rebuilding and additions are to be evaluated and prioritized sustainability analyses based on multi-criteria analysis and cost-benefit analysis can provide valuable information insights without equivalent. Our sustainability analyses help policy makers make well-founded priorities and decisions.

Our foremost area of expertise is onsite wastewater treatment and industrial wastewater treatment with a focus on achieving environmental and health protection as well as reuse of water, nutrition and energy in a way that is economically efficient.

Within this field of expertise, we contribute to long-term sustainability of innovation systems and projects in water, sanitation and sustainable resource management in markets outside the EU and the USA.

Many structures are exposed to water during use: water pipes and connectors, cooling-water systems, condensers, ships, etc.

The Swedish wastewater systems and wastewater treatment plants face large investments and stricter demands and requirements. New tools are required to evaluate performance and optimize efficiency.

Growing Cities and a changing climate require improved stormwater management in Swedish cities in order to meet future challenges and create more attractive and liveable urban environments.

Wastewater is a poorly utilised resource.  Our team at RISE aims at making better use of the resources present in waste streams such as process water, by using various bioprocesses not just to purify the water but also to produce valuable products.
