DOUBLE BARRIER: AI-driven solutions to combat bacterial infections

DOUBLE BARRIER is a Vinnova-funded initiative uniting partners from the US, the UK and Sweden to work together on the development of the concept DOUBLE BARRIER, which aims to integrate AI-driven multi-omics diagnostics and next-generation prevention strategies to combat bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Antimicrobial resistance is recognised by the World Health Organization as one of the major threats to global health and sustainable development. Each year, AMR is responsible for over 1 million deaths, and associated with more than 4 million. AMR is constantly raising and thus undermines our capability to treat common infections and challenges the foundations of modern medicine.

The vision is a future where rapid, data-rich, multi-omics-based diagnostics powered by artificial intelligence (AI) enable personalised treatment for infectious diseases, improving patient outcomes. The generated data and AI will also contribute to more effective infection prevention strategies. This flexible, adaptable strategy can integrate diverse omics and clinical data from patients to determine the best treatment for bacterial infections and guide prevention strategies. It will operate in real time, processing each dataset immediately as it is generated.

RISE coordinates the project and provides expertise in genomics, proteomics, clinical microbiology and AI. RISE will lead a pilot study that will take place in London and Washington DC. It will also lead joint funding applications. The project will strenthen the collaboration between the partners: RISE, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, The National Institutes of Health (USA), Veirulence Ltd. (UK) and Imperial College London (UK).

  • Veirulence Ltd. (UK): company developing virulence factor targeting therapeutics for prevention and treatment of infections.

  • Imperial College London (UK): provides expertise in metabolomics.

  • The National Institutes of Health (NIH): provides expertise in –omics data analysis.

  • Sahlgrenska University Hospital: expertise in clinical microbiology and proteomics.
