Nordic cooperation on hydrogen in Öresund, Kattegat and Skagerak

Sweden, Denmark and Norway currently lack a shared basis for where electrification is sufficient and where hydrogen is needed as a complement, which risks slowing down and increasing the cost of the transition to a fossil-free energy system. RISE's mapping of the region's current energy use, production and exports forms the foundation for the continued work. RISE then contributes technical analysis throughout NOVA, from calculating future energy demand and simulating the energy system to the threat and vulnerability analysis and the final roadmap.

Together, the partners in NOVA produce everything from economic analyses of investment and operating costs (CAPEX and OPEX) for future system configurations to port cases on bunkering, refuelling and energy handling for vessels, as well as a regulatory mapping against EU frameworks such as AFIR, RED III and Fit for 55. The work also includes a threat and vulnerability analysis of climate risks, cyber threats and security of supply in the region's energy system.

A clear picture of today's energy system

RISE leads the work of mapping three sectors, industry, transport and the residential and service sector, and compiles the partners' data into a joint report. The work includes:

• Analysis of bottlenecks and capacity constraints in the energy system
• Mapping of where carbon dioxide emissions originate, to identify sustainable carbon flows for future PtX and e-fuel production
• Identification of existing green value chains in the region
• A baseline report that forms the foundation for the project's continued analyses

RISE expertise in energy and electrification

RISE offers more than 130 test and demonstration facilities for development within the energy transition, and is a member of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). Through the collaboration platform Energiklivet, energy companies, industry and the public sector are connected around joint initiatives.
