Opening of batteries-post mortem analysis

Opening Li-ion batteries for detailed studies of aging or breakdown is very useful for increased understanding.
Likewise, other types of batteries can be opened after discussion. Visual assessment as well as chemical and physical analyzes are linked to the materials that are exposed. For example, electron microscopy (SEM) can be performed.

Purpose

Faliure investigations and aging studies (post mortem analysis) of batteries presuppose that they are opened to expose spacers and active electrode surfaces. This can be done in a glove box environment with an inert atmosphere with control of oxygen and water. Visual inspection of the condition as well as coupled advanced analysis with electron microscope (SEM), chemical specification (XPS / ESCA), Raman and FTIR microscopy can also be performed.

Method

Battery opening in Glove box
