System Integrity Protection Schemes for increased Transfer Capacity

Research project to build competence on how the capacity utilisaton in the electric power grid is affected through the use of System Integrity Protection Schemes (SIPS). The project includes PhD candidates at Lund University and the Royal University of Science and Technology, with a reference group including Svenska kraftnät, Statnett, Fingrid, E.O

Project focus on increased knowledge of SIPS as part of the “Smart Transmission Grid” with the aim to provide a secure and reliable increase of the transfer capacity of the existing power grid.

The over-arching goal of the project is to build competence in steps related to how the capacity utilisaton in the electric power grid is affected through the use of SIPS, including:

  • Design and placement of SIPS
  • SIPS impact on power system stability
  • SIPS impact on allocation of capacity to the market
  • SIPS impact on the how the power system is planned and operated in real time
