Swedish-German Research Collaboration on Electric Road Systems

Goal

• to increase the common knowledge around ERS by cooperation between Germany and Sweden
• to discuss potential long-term strategies for a successful transnational implementation of ERS in Europe.

Objectives

• to increase awareness of ERS at the national and European levels
• to share knowledge between Sweden and Germany about ERS
• to provide participants with insight in good practice examples of the methodology used to analyse ERS from different perspectives
• to identify similarities and differences of ERS in Germany and Sweden
• to develop proposals for implementation strategies for Germany and Sweden and consider further opportunities on the EU level
• to involve relevant stakeholders and to provide expertise for the discussion on the implementation of transnational ERS

Results

Several reports can be accessed from the project website electricroads.org/collers:

• assessment of different ERS concepts and an up-to-date overview of international ERS activities
• definition of criteria for electric roads and identification of suitable ERS freight corridors between Sweden and Germany, and also considering adjoining freight corridors
• discussion of promising business models and financing strategies for ERS
• recommendations for necessary policy actions
• study of the impact of ERS on the energy system and the environment

Organisation

The project team consisted of the core members from the Swedish Research and Innovation Platform for Electric Roads and the two national German research projects Roadmap OH-Lkw and StratON

German research partners: Öko-Institut e.V., ifeu - Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg, Heilbronn University for Applied Sciences, and Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology.

Swedish research partners: RISE, Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), and Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration)-
