Safety in tunnels, mines and other underground constructions

Fire, risk and safety in tunnels, mines, rock chambers, car parks and other underground constructions are central areas of research and expertise at RISE. Our mission is to work for increased safety and efficiency nationally and internationally.

About safety in tunnels, mines and other underground constructions

A fire in a tunnel, mine, rock chamber, car park or other underground space can have serious consequences. Confined spaces create challenges for evacuation and Fire and Rescue Services.

Safety in tunnels, mines and other underground constructions – how do we achieve it?

All energy carriers entail various forms of hazards. New energy carriers such as CNG and hydrogen present unique challenges for enclosed spaces, not least from a rescue service perspective.

RISE knows underground safety

RISE has expertise and knowledge that helps our customers find safe, cost-effective solutions that lead to socio-economic savings. Our long experience in fire, risk and safety provides valuable and world-leading competence in fire safety in tunnels, mines and other underground constructions.

Collaboration for safety in tunnels, mines and other underground constructions

To contribute to worldwide safety in underground space, we believe that networking and knowledge exchange between society's actors is essential. We are pleased to be able to share our expertise through active participation in various networks. Also, we take an active role in different committees and reference groups worldwide.

Conferences for safety in underground constructions

To make tomorrow's tunnels and other underground construcitons safer, researchers and problem owners need to work closely together, of which the Swedish network TUSC - Tunnel and Underground Safety Center is a good example. Since 2003, we have enabled cooperation between the world's experts by arranging the International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security (ISTSS) conference. We also arrange the Fires in Vehicles (FIVE) conference for valuable experience exchange and presentation of new research.
