The alarm sounds – and the transmission must not fail. Ensuring that vital emergency communications information gets through can mean the difference between life and death. As the current communication system is replaced by a new one based on 5G, the testing methods for a more robust system are already in place.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down and the digitalisation of society accelerated. But as the security situation tightens, we need to rethink how we protect our information systems. It is not security à la new wall that is needed, but rather the properties of the blade of grass that lead us to resilient information systems. 

Securing mountain slopes to prevent rockslides involves many risks. One of them is vibrations from the drills causing permanent injury. Now, however, there are new technical solutions able to significantly reduce the risk of vibration injuries.  “The risk of hand injuries is greatly reduced compared to before. This is a major step forward,” says Thomas Clemm, head of corporate healthcare at the Norwegian company Mesta. 

Full-scale war is both an expensive and very risky tool for gaining control of another country. Hybrid threats, on the other hand, with everything from smear campaigns to cyberattacks, are much-used alternatives, and put businesses, authorities and other organizations at the risk of being used as game pieces. But there are two effective ways to reduce the risk of your business being exploited.

Protecting one's business against future threats is difficult because no one knows exactly what will happen, or when it will happen. But with the help of the interdisciplinary field of foresight, it is easier to both look ahead in time, and to determine the decisions that need to be made in order for that future to be as favourable as possible.
