A significant challenge for increased circularity is our low material utilization; according to the Circularity Gap Report, Sweden is only 3.4 % circular. By examining how we handle our secondary materials and the entire value chain, there is great potential to improve our resource utilization.

In Sweden, we live as if we have four planets at our disposal. However, it is not sustainable, and we need to switch to circular material and product flows. One way is to increase the proportion of remanufactured components and products.

Circular design aims at maximizing the durability, repairability, reusability and recyclability of a product. The quality of a recycled material is critically dependent on the quality of the  waste material used; hence circular value chains must start with a well-reasoned design.

Construction and demolition waste constitutes a significant part of the total waste in Sweden and the EU. Only a minor fraction is reused or recycled. RISE works to increase the circular flow of building materials in society while ensuring the quality of recycled materials or materials containing recycled raw materials.
