Sofie Contributes to the Industry’s Sustainable Transition
At RISE, Sofie Gustafsson gets to combine her interest in the environment and technology through research projects that support the transition of industry. As a recent graduate, she appreciates the variety, the clear sustainability perspective and the opportunity to grow in line with the assignments.
Sofie graduated with a Master of Science in Engineering from Lund University in 2024. Shortly afterwards, she began her journey at RISE as a Research and Development Engineer:
– I wanted to be in a place where environmental issues and green transition are something you work with, and which permeates the entire workplace. It feels like that's the case at RISE, where many people work with sustainability in some way and contribute to a better environment.
Sofie and her colleagues work in different ways with the sustainable transition of industry and society:
– I am part of a group that uses methods such as system dynamics modelling to look at sustainability issues from a broader systems perspective. This helps us and our partners to understand the connections, effects and consequences in different socio-technical systems, in order to facilitate decision-making.
We don't always do things the same way; instead, we test many new ideas, which is challenging in a way, but also very enjoyable
At the beginning of her professional journey, Sofie appreciates the variety in her work and the opportunity to learn and develop:
– It is challenging to join a large research institute as a recent graduate because there is such a wide variety in what you do. We don't always do things the same way; instead, we test many new ideas, which is challenging in a way, but also very enjoyable.
Sofie also highlights her colleagues and the broad range of expertise as particularly valuable at RISE:
– There is such breadth at RISE. We know a lot about many different areas and there is a great deal of knowledge around us. It is very inspiring to be in a room with people who have so much expertise.
Sofie has quickly had the opportunity to develop in her role. The nature of research, with constantly new projects and ideas, means that learning never stops. There is room to try new things, build on your expertise and take steps forward in your career:
– I am driven by development, and there is a lot of that here with the research projects you are involved in, where the aim is development and creating new solutions. I am certainly learning a lot now that I am new, but I don't see that slowing down. New projects are coming in, which means that your skills are constantly developing. I look forward to learning even more, developing further and taking new steps in my career at RISE.
