Digital water meters are rapidly becoming the standard across Swedish water and wastewater utilities, creating new opportunities for data-driven decision-making. VA-SMART will generate knowledge, practical insights and guidance to help the sector unlock the value of smart meter data and turn it into tangible operational benefits.
Digital water meters are rapidly becoming the standard across Swedish water and wastewater utilities. At the same time, approaches, system solutions and the ability to utilise meter data for purposes such as leak detection, operational optimisation and customer communication vary considerably.
The project will map how utilities currently collect, analyse and use water meter data. Through surveys, interviews and workshops, it will identify both challenges and success factors related to technology, organisation, legal aspects and security.
The project also includes an international outlook analysis to explore emerging applications and approaches. Experiences from Swedish and international stakeholders will provide a broader perspective on how water meter data can be transformed into value.
The results will be compiled in an SVU report that provides the Swedish water sector with a shared knowledge base and guidance for future system choices, data management and organisational development. The goal is to enable more utilities to realise the full potential of digital water meters.
The project is led by Ecoloop and RISE in collaboration with Falköping Municipality, Norrvatten, Örebro Municipality and Uppsala Vatten och Avfall, which contribute practical experience and insights from their ongoing work with digital water meters. The project is further supported by a broader group of water and wastewater utilities that contribute knowledge and exchange of experiences.
