The project RES-flyg (Resource-efficient energy system solutions for airports with high share of electric aviation) is a research project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and Swedavia AB. Participating parties are RISE, Uppsala University, Swedavia and Skellefteå City Airport.
The energy transition is heading towards increased electrification of society in general, which also includes aviation and airports. This means increased electricity needs and a need to develop the airport into a sustainable local energy system with the conditions for electrification of aircraft and a well-functioning interaction with the overall energy system.
Therefore, it is important to create tools for simulation / evaluation of infrastructure solutions. Within the project, concepts and sub-modules are being developed for a first version of such a tool, which is based on a survey of electricity needs today, and at a future high degree of electrification. The simulation environment for the energy system at an airport begins with electricity networks, renewable electricity production, energy storage, control strategies and flexibility solutions for different loads.
These building blocks make it possible to analyze how the development of electric aviation can take place with renewable energy, resource-efficiently, strategically and in symbiosis with the rest of the energy system.
