CIRNAP

This project aims to demonstrate a chemical recycling concept to convert hard-to-recycle plastic waste into circular naphtha as a drop-in feedstock for steam cracking. Site Zero's sorted mixed plastic waste stream will be used as the feedstock. The process concept will be experimentally validated and further developed into a business model.

Plastic waste poses a major environmental challenge globally. Mixed plastic waste streams, in particular, are difficult to recycle mechanically, making incineration the dominant treatment option.

The project will use a sorted mixed plastic waste stream from Site Zero to conduct experimental studies. The process for converting plastic waste into circular naphtha consists of pyrolysis, hydroprocessing, and fractionation. The process conditions will be optimized and validated at pilot scale. The experimental data will serve as input for a system-level analysis, in which the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of the process will be evaluated at an industrially relevant scale.

The project will deliver a validated process concept for producing circular naphtha from hard-to-recycle plastic waste. It will generate knowledge that advances the development of chemical recycling, improves the utilization of plastic waste, and reduces dependence on fossil feedstocks. The project results will support future scale-up efforts, strengthen Sweden’s circular plastics economy, create business opportunities in chemical recycling, and contribute to Sweden’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
