I work as a researcher and project manager, mainly with chemical analysis and preparative separation of organic substances using liquid chromatography, LC. I have a degree in pharmacy and a PhD in pharmacognosy (natural product chemistry).
Techniques I use for purity and assay analysis are LC-UV, and for non-UV active compounds LC-CAD, LC-RI and high-resolution LC-MS.
For preparative purification and isolation of contaminants, I use either preparative LC-UV or LC-MS.
At RISE, we also have Centrifugal Partition Chromatography CPC, which is a preparative liquid-liquid technology without solid stationary phase material. The system consists of two immiscible liquid phases and the separation of sample components is done through distribution over these phases. Especially good for compounds that bind tightly or irreversibly to solid column material.
I also do chiral analyses with LC-UV and LC-RI, and preparative chiral purification e.g. of the enantiomers in a racemate, with LC-UV. At RISE, we have a number of different chiral columns for both analysis and preparative separation.
An ongoing development project is continuous chromatography. We have built up a bench-top system with analytical pumps and columns and intend to purify biological molecules. The results we have obtained so far point to improved yield and purity with continuous chromatography on our system compared to separation in batch.
