Moment of inertia measurement

RISE offers a method to estimate moment of inertia experimentally using a tri-filar pendulum. The moment of inertia can be measured with respect to selected axes of rotation. In addition, the complete inertia tensor of the body can be estimated through a series of measurements around multiple axes of rotation.

Purpose

The moment of inertia is a crucial dynamic property of rigid bodies that explains the rotational inertia around given axes. The moment of inertia tensor together with the mass and the centre of mass gives a complete description of the rigid body dynamics. The moment of inertia is commonly estimated through virtual models (e.g. FE-models). However, for complex bodies with different material compositions, the mass distribution can be hard to model. The experimental measurement can then be a valuable complement.

Method

For the tri-filar pendulum method, the moment of inertia is estimated by measuring the period time of the pendulum rotation. In addition, digital image correlation (DIC) is used to track the orientation of the body relative to the axis of rotation.

Depending on the size and shape of the body, RISE also offers to estimate the moment of inertia using experimental modal analysis. If you wish to learn more about both methods, feel free to contact us.

Delivery

Results from the measurements are documented in a report.
