Air permeability of textiles according to SS-EN ISO 9237.

The air permeability of a fabric is a measure of how well the fabric allows air to pass through it. The air permeability property is of importance for a number of applications, such as for e.g. industrial filters, tents, sails, parachutes, raincoat materials, wind-blocking clothing fabrics, down-proof fabrics and airbags etc.

Purpose

The method aims to analyse the ability of the fabric to let air pass through the fabric.

In some applications, you do not want air to penetrate the material, e.g. a windbreaker, while in other applications you want the air to pass through the fabric easily. By analysing the air permeability properties of a material, it is possible to assess its suitability for the intended application.

Method

The velocity of an airflow passing perpendicular through a test material under specific conditions of test area and pressure drop is measured, i.e. the velocity required to achieve a desired pressure drop.
The test material is clamped in the air permeability device with the right side facing the air inlet. The air is sucked through the test material, the air flow is adjusted so that the agreed pressure drop is achieved.
The velocity of the airflow is read in mm / s, which is the material's result for the air permeability.

Normal test area is 20 cm2 and for garments the pressure difference is normally 100Pa, and for fabrics for industrial use, 200Pa.If the above test area and/or pressure difference is not suitable to use, the alternatives 5 cm2, 50 cm2, 100 cm2 and 50 Pa or 500 Pa may be used if agreed.

If you want to compare the test result, the same test area and pressure drop must be used.
