Multifunctional Protected Spaces (MIST)

How can spaces that protect us in crises also enhance everyday urban life? The MIST project explores how protected spaces can serve multiple purposes and benefit society both in peacetime and during crises. By combining preparedness with social sustainability, the project aims to help create safer, more inclusive and vibrant urban environments.

As the need for stronger civil preparedness grows, new demands are being placed on how we plan and design our cities. Protected spaces, such as civil defence shelters, are an important part of society’s preparedness, yet often see limited use in everyday life. At the same time, many cities lack available spaces for social, cultural and other activities that benefit society.

The project Multifunctional Protected Spaces: Integrated Solutions for Safe, Inclusive and Vibrant Urban Environments (MIST) explores how these needs can be addressed by developing solutions that combine protective functions with uses that create value in peacetime. Examples include spaces for meetings, culture, recreation or other activities that bring people together and contribute to vibrant urban life.

The project takes a holistic approach, bringing together technical, social, economic and organisational considerations. A central question is how protected spaces can be designed and managed to enable flexible use while meeting requirements for safety, accessibility and preparedness.

By exploring the opportunities, barriers and conditions for multifunctional protected spaces, the project aims to generate new knowledge and develop solutions that can be applied to future urban planning and the development of the built environment.

MIST therefore aims to support a more integrated approach to protection, preparedness and urban development, where investments in safety and security can also improve quality of life, promote social inclusion and enable more efficient use of the built environment.
