AI is becoming part of the team
We are moving into a new era of work. AI is becoming an active part of how work gets done. As AI systems become more capable, the skills people need are changing too. The challenge is no longer only to produce the answer, but to define the task, guide the process, assess the quality and take responsibility for the consequences.
AI as a collaborative force
This shift is already visible in software development. Agent-driven tools can write code, run tests, debug and iterate together with humans. But the same question is now moving into many other areas: research, education, administration, communication and decision support.
What do we need to know when AI becomes a collaborative force in our work?
AI is moving into the infrastructure
This was one of my main takeaways from RISE Computer Science Open House, held in April. Behind the demos, from edge AI and privacy-preserving analysis to distributed systems, autonomous environments, robotics, energy and satellites, the same movement was visible. AI is moving out of the chat window and into the infrastructure of work, industry and society.
This makes Digitalisation & AI much more than a technology area. It is about building capability in people, organisations and societal systems. AI cannot simply be introduced. It needs to be understood, governed, reviewed and designed in from the start.
New capabilities for a new working life
This places new demands on education, workplaces and leadership. What should people know when tools can carry out more of the practical work? How do we assess understanding when producing an answer is no longer the same thing as having knowledge? How do we organise responsibility when humans and machines solve tasks together?
That is why we need to build new capabilities. Not only technical capabilities, but human and organisational ones: understanding context, making wise trade-offs, setting boundaries, creating trust and learning in step with the technology.
I believe there are strong reasons for optimism. Not because this transition is simple, but because it gives us the opportunity to focus more on what truly matters.
