Influence of Wind-Wave Interaction on the Offshore Wind Farms
The project investigates how the wave-wind interaction of the marine atmospheric boundary layer influences the blockage effects on offshore find farms. This is accomplished through the development of a model chain which will be validated using field data from the Baltic Sea and Kattegatt.
The purpose of the study is to increase knowledge on blockage effect and reduce uncertainties related to power production in wind farms. The main goal of the project is to perform a techno-economical study on blockage effects on offshore wind farm energy systems with focus on wave-wind interaction, bathymetry and sea bottom structure's impact.
The specific objectives are the following:
1. Derive benchmarking data based on full scale data from two sites in the Baltic Sea/Kattegatt to quantify blockage effects on wind farms sites.
2. To develop high-resolution open-source tools for coupled wave-wind modelling of offshore wind farms. The developed models will be released within the nektar++ distribution.
3. To investigate the potential effect that the bathymetry can have on the marine atmospheric boundary layer and subsequently on the production of offshore wind farms.
4. Map territorial waters primarily for Baltic Sea countries according to their expected exposure to blockage effects.
5. Establish new collaborations between RISE, universities and offshore wind developers on offshore wind energy research.
