From Thesis Student to Research and Development Engineer
When Emil Hed did his thesis project at RISE, he did not know that it would be the start of an exciting career in research and development. But when a job opening came up that matched the content of his thesis, he took the chance – and got the job.
Today, Emil works as a research and development engineer focusing on simulation and modelling of chemical production and processing processes:
– We use the results and data from various types of experiments and model what happens when we scale up the processes, what happens to the different process streams and what happens to the cost? These are important questions in order to assess whether a process is realistic to implement on a larger scale.
The work is a mixture of customer assignments and research projects, with a clear focus on sustainability:
– All the research projects are about developing green technologies to replace fossil fuels. It feels really cool to be working on that. The work is varied; we work on different types of projects, topics and with different focuses, which I appreciate.
There is a lot you can learn from others, you can ask almost anything, and someone will have the answer
Emil sees RISE's size and breadth as an advantage:
– I think it's great that there is so much information and knowledge to draw on. There is a lot you can learn from others, you can ask almost anything, and someone will have the answer. It also feels like there are opportunities to specialise in a subject that you find particularly interesting, or to change career path within the organisation if you want to.
For Emil, it is also important that RISE has a clear mission:
– The work is quite strongly linked to major societal issues in various ways, which makes my job feel meaningful. The purpose of RISE is big and important, and something that I really support and am proud of.
