Nutrition with precision

RISE can measure digestion, metabolism and efficacy of foodstuff and supplements. With advanced methods and state-of-the art techniques, we can answer your questions and help you to comply with the regulatory demands on your product.

Specific health effects of foodstuff and supplements

It is often complex to assess the exact effects of food and food supplements. Our experts at RISE has in depth knowledge about the whole chain of events necessary to transform macro- and micronutrients to physiological responses in the body. In our laboratories, we have methods for measuring a variety of biomarkers which may guide to better understanding of the impact on health of a specific substance.

Measure product effects

To claim a product has a certain effect on health, it needs to be proven that the substance, or for example the health promoting bacteria or vitamins, reaches its target and that the stipulated efficacy is achieved.

At RISE, we have the expertise to measure so called bioactivity, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of substances by measuring a variety of different biomarkers.

Bioaccessibility

  • Advanced sample preparation equipment and microscopy for in vitro digestion, and analysis of the metabolized products.
  • Identification and concentration assessment of biomolecules, for example amino acids, proteins and carbohydrates. Control of levels of unwanted ingredients, for example anti-nutritional substances and salts.

Bioactivity & Biomarkers

  • Identification of biomarkers and bioanalysis (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) for determining the efficacy, pathology or for example inflammation in various tissues.
  • Model of small intestine absorption and effect on gut epithelium, for example inflammatory response.
  • Concentration determination of various biomarkers, for example lipids and amino acids, proteins and carbohydrates. Control of levels of unwanted content such as anti-nutritional substances and salinity.
  • In vivo models. RISE can perform regulatory studies (GLP) if market approval requires it.

What is allowed to say about the health effects of foodstuff and supplements?

Within the EU, the labelling and marketing of foods with health messages is governed by common legislation. Together with statements and guidelines from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and national authorities (in Sweden the Swedish Food Agency), the legislation regulates nutrition and health claims for all foods, including dietary supplements. For example, the regulation defines the required content of the substance that the claim refer to and provides guidance on the required scientific support for different claims. RISE has experts who can help interpret and apply the regulation.
