Tribology in Hot Aluminium Forming

Aluminium is a lightweight material that can be used for lightweight designs, and with hot forming, geometrically complex shapes can be achieved. However, there are several challenges with the process, e.g. friction and wear in the interaction between the hot aluminium working material and the tooling material.

Hot forming of aluminium is an area which presently is receiving increasing attention. Aluminium is a lightweight material that can be used for lightweight designs in e.g. automotive applications. However, key aspects of hot aluminium forming which have not been adequately understood are the friction characteristics and wear behaviour during interaction of aluminium and tool materials at high temperatures. Friction between the hot aluminium and tool surface is crucial for the shape and quality of the produced component. Wear of the tools is not only decisive for maintenance intervals and overall process economy, but also influences the quality of the produced parts.

The objective of the proposed project is to increase the robustness and predictability of hot aluminium forming by significantly raising the level of understanding regarding the tribological phenomena occurring in the evaluated processes, creating best practice guidelines and developing and implementing advanced friction modelling into forming simulations.

The proposed project consortium possesses competence from all relevant parts of the value chain concerning hot forming of aluminium including supply of raw material, tool steel, lubrication and surface coatings, hot stamping process and research as well as relevant industrial applications.

The project is financially supported by the Strategic innovation programme Lightweight, a joint effort between Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency.
