RUGGEDISED -Smart and energy efficient cities
The Smart Cities project RUGGEDISED will test solutions for management and control of heat and electric energy in cities. Investments are done in measurement and control systems which enables a more efficient management of demand and supply, in three European cities.
Aim and goal
The ambition of RUGGEDISED is to demonstrate ha Smart Cities technology can improve the management of energy and thereby reduce energy consumption in buildings and transport in city districts. The focus is on combining different technical solutions in buildings, smart grids and infrastructures as well as local energy production. The three cities Rotterdam, Glasgow and Umeå will implement investments with this purpose. Apart from the demonstration projects, RUGGEDISED also has the ambition to enable an upscaling of the technical solutions in a city. To do this, several organisational and non-technical barriers need to be removed.
The challenge is that cities today are too dependent on non-renewable energy sources.
RUGGEDISED addresses the challenge by showing how a combination and integration of different technical solutions can reduce energy demand and manage production and distribution in a more efficient way.
By showing the effects of the technical solutions and the preparation for an upscaling, the ambition is to contribute with concrete examples of how cities can work to drastically reduce the demand for non-renewable energy.
