Calibration of Pressure Balances at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of Pressure Balances at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for pressure and vacuum performs calibration of pressure balances. This is the most accurate and complex calibration performed and is done according to current standards and guides.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and  spreading metrological competens and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The pressure balance to be calibrated is connected to the National Labratory's reference pressure balance. The calibration takes place at six to eight pressure points over the balance pressure range. At each level, the balances are balanced against each other, whereby a reference pressure is obtained and used for calculation of results.

There are two methods used in pressure balance calibration. The first method gives a result in form of correction terms at certain pressure levels as well as associated measurement uncertainties. According to this method, the weights of the object does not need to be calibrated before the pressure balance calibration but certiain weight compositions are used to set a nominal pressure. This means that the calibration results only covers the specifik calibrated pressure levels.

The second method involves weighing the weights and piston / cylinder combination at the National Laboratory for mass. The result from that calibration is then used to calculate the effective area of the piston / cylinder combination by means of the reference pressure. This means that the pressure balance is calibrated so that the customer receives sufficient information to be able to measure pressure over the entire pressure balance interval, not just the pressure levels covered in the calibration certificate.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

Results are reported in a digital calibration certificate in Swedish or English. The result is presented as correction terms with associated measurement uncertainties or as effective area with measurement uncertainties, depending on the method used for the calibration. The certificate also contains information that the calibration was performed at a National Laboratory.

Calibration of flowmeters at The National Laboratory

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Calibration of flowmeters at The National Laboratory Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

The National Laboratory for Volume and Flow offers calibration of different types of flowmeters.

Purpose/Benefit:

The national laboratories are responsible for maintaining the national reference standards for each measurement quantity and spreading metrological competence and traceability to industry and society at large. The national reference standards are the highest level of traceability in Sweden.

A calibration performed at a national laboratory fullfils all typical traceability and accreditation requirements that commonly exist in industry and society at large.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Each type of meter requires its own calibration method and equipment. The National Laboratory för Volume and Flow has about ten measurement equipments to be able to calibrate different types of flowmeters.

Calibration of the entire signal chain

When calibrating it is impotant that the output signal (for example the pulse, the flow or the current display device) that are used normally, also is the one that is being calibrated. Output signals can go through separate amplifiers or converters and they can have different time constants and different zero suppression. Because of that, it is very important that the whole signal chain is calibrated. By calibrating, the error of the flowmeter's display can be determined.

Different flowmeters requires different calibration methods

Each type of meter requires its own calibration method and equipment. Questions regarding the choice of method and equipment include the following:

  • type of meter (resolution, type of output signal, integration time, etc.)
  • type of liquid (density, viscosity, aggressiveness, temperature, pressure, etc)
  • mode of use (continuous operation, dosing volume, installation, etc.)
  • accuracy (which measurement uncertainty to be accepted)

We have about ten measurement equipments to be able to calibrate differnet types of flowmeters

To be able to meet different requirements of calibration, we have calibration resources in the form of about ten different types of measuring equipment, several of which are fully or partly self-developed. As a national laboratory, RISE is responsible for the national standards, which means that our measurements are directly traceable to these standards.

SP Method 5320 - System tests for safety systems intended for engine compartments - Fire detection systems

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Tests for fire detection systems intended for engine compartments Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Tests for fire detection systems intended for engine compartment according to SP Method 5320.

Purpose/Benefit:

The test method described in this document is intended to test and rate the detection performance of fire detection systems installed in engine compartments. The test method also examines the durability of the system components.

To ensure early detection of fire and durability of detection systems, there is a need for fire detectors intended for engine compartments to be tested. Many of the challenges in this environment, are namely not specifically tested for in other standards for fire detection systems. These challenges are, for example, complex geometries cluttered with obstructions, high airflows, high temperatures and hot surfaces, dirt and dust, as well as vibrations, shocks and corrosion. SP Method 5320, considers these challenges, allowing for rapid performance evaluation under realistic and repeatable conditions.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The test method is divided over a number of different categories. Firstly, the complete system is test in a mock-up engine compartment as follows:

  • The System Coverage Test evaluates the response time of fire detectors for both small and large fires under varying ventilation conditions. In total 13 different fire scenarios are considered to ensure the detection system has the ability to detect fires starting in practically every possible location in the engine compartment.
  • The Response Time Test gives information on and compares the response times of detection systems in two fire scenarios; a slow-growing fire and an instant large flaming fire. This ensures that detection systems are equipped with components that allow for detecting both of these very different fire scenarios.

To secure the surviveability of the fire detection system and its components they are also subjected to component tests. These tests consider their durability to corrosion, ageing, temperature variations, vibrations, schock, EMC as well as ingress of dust and water. Before and after these tests, individual components are also subjected to the following test cases:

  • The activation temperature and response time of heat detectors is analysed in the Heat Detection Test. This is done before and after component levels tests, to ensure that these do not affect their function in a negative way. In addition to this, the sensitivity of heat detectors to false alarms is tested.
  • Flame detectors are tested in the Flame Detection Test to ensure their sensitivity was not affect by the components tests. Flame detectors are also subjected to field of view tests to guarantee detection ability is preserved for the complete field of view.
  • The sensitivity of smoke or as detectors is investigated in a smoke tunnel during the Smoke/Gas Detection Test. Time to activation and obscuration at activation is compared before and after component testing.
Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

After testing, a test report is delivered with the results which may be the basis for product approval (P-mark) according to SPCR 197.

Tests for fire suppression systems intended for engine compartments according to SP Method 4912, UNECE R107, and/or AIS

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Tests for fire suppression systems intended for engine compartments Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Tests for fire suppression systems intended for engine compartments according to SP Method 4912, UNECE R107, AIS 135

Purpose/Benefit:

This method assesses the fire suppression performance of fire suppression systems under mock-up operational conditions. For this purpose, several different types of fires are ignited and stabilised inside an enclosure with engine compartment characteristics. Fire suppression systems are then evaluated based on its ability to extinguish the various test fires.

SP Method 4912 tests fire suppression systems intended for engine compartments in a well-defined and objective way. Systems are subjected to realistic fire scenarios that can occur on and around a vehicle or machine, as a means to evaluate their performance. The system tests are based on the geometry, obstructions and air flow typically found in engine compartments. This allows for rapid performance evaluation under reproducible and repeatable conditions.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

The fire suppression system may be subjected to the test scenarios listed below. In the end, a system will achieve a ranking based on the number of tests completed and the conditions, e.g. ventilation rates and/or level of openness of the testing rig, under which this was achieved.

  • High Fire Loads evaluate the fire suppression system's ability to suppress large fires. As an example, these large fires may originate from a broken pressurised fuel hose that sprays against hot surfaces, resulting in rapid fire development. It is crucial that fire suppression systems can effectively deal with these fires, as they may even occur if reliable detectors are installed.
  • Low Fire Loads are used to judge the system's ability to deal with small fires in an enclosure. These small fires can be difficult to extinguish and require that the distribution of suppressant in the compartment is effective.
  • Systems that can extinguish our Class A Fires have proven their ability to deal with deap-seated fires in fibrous materials. Examples of such materials are sound insulation, rubber and/or some plastics, which commonly act as a secondary fuel source.
  • Obstructions are often present in engine compartments. This is emphasised in our Hidden Fires test. Here the suppression system shall extinguish a small obstructed fire that is out of reach for direct fire suppression. As such, the total flooding capabilities of a system is evaluated.
  • Certain components in engine compartments may still be hot enough to ignite flammable material after a fire has been extinguished. Our Hot Surface Re-Ignition test evaluates the fire suppression system's performance in cooling down those hot surfaces.

The Level of Opennes of our testing rig can be modified to reflect the environment in which the fire suppression system shall be used. This will affect the final rating of the fire suppression system also, with an increasing score for an increasing level of openness. The highest possible openness level is achieved when tests are completed when no floor, ceiling, and walls are considered in the testing rig.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

After testing, a test report is delivered with the results which may be the basis for product approval, for example according to SPCR 183 or SPCR 199 (P-mark).
