Division: Division Safety and Transport

The project consortium consists of five organisations, with leading international reputations and strong backgrounds in fire testing and certification activities, and with particular experience in the development of façade fire testing methods. The project is led by RISE, the previous chair of the European Group of Laboratories for Fire testing (EGOLF) Technical Committee on fire resistance (TC2) in liaison with EOTA, CEN TC127, ISO TC92/SC1 and SH02.

The aim is to finalise and fine-tune the assessment method developed by the Contractor at the previous stage as the “alternative method” so that the method can be directly used for harmonised products standards (in CEN) and for European Assessment Documents (in EOTA) regarding the relevant construction products (kits) within the framework of implementation of Regulation (EU) 305/2011.

The outcome of the project is a European approach to assess the fire performance of facades.

Type examination and certification of temporary structures

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Temporary structures Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Scaffolds and ladders that are sold and used in Sweden must be type examined and meet the requirements of the Swedish Work Environment Authority's regulations. RISE performs type control for these products in Sweden and now also has the opportunity to issue certificates for products to be sold in Norway in accordance the Produsentforskriften.

Purpose/Benefit:

We perform analyzes and calculations of all types of building structures, structural details and scaffolding. Some examples of scaffolding that we evaluated with FEM analyzes are scaffolding, pallet racks, temporary grandstands and cable ladders. RISE has extensive experience of evaluations, both against Swedish norms and regulations, as AFS 2023:9, as well as foreign standards.

Scaffolding, scaffolding components and ladders need to be type examined or certified in order for them to be marketed and sold in Sweden and Norway. Examples of products that we can type examine/ certify as an accredited body are:

  • Facade scaffolding
  • Mobile access tower
  • Couplers
  • Platforms and woden grating
  • Ladders and trestles
  • Temporary edge protection systems (for Norway only)
  • Safety nets (for Norway only)

RISE is accredited to be able to do this both according to the Swedish Work Environment Authority's requirements in Sweden but also according to the corresponding requirements of the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority .

Finite Element calculations

Computer calculations are a powerful tool, not least when used in combination with testing, which are increasingly used in product and system evaluation. Advanced calculations are mainly performed using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Component tests are often used to generate input data for the calculation model and full-scale tests for validation of the calculation model. Finite element calculations in combination with scaffolding testing have become a specialty for RISE.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Evaluation and testing of temporary structures are carried out at our accredited operations in Borås where we have our laboratory. We have accreditation for methods in scaffoldings, ladders, trestles, temporary edge protection systems  and safety nets.

The work include both accredited and non-accredited testing methods. The scope of accreditation is available upon request – please feel free to contact us for more information.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

The result of an assignment is usually a calculation or test report in which the product's properties and carrying capacity are reported. If the product is to be type-examined, a type-examination certificate or certificate will be issued in accordance with the Swedish Work Environment Authority's regulations for the Swedish market or the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority's regulations for the Norwegian market.

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): CE marking of personal protective equipment, PPE Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Personal protective equipment (PPE) placed on the EU market must comply with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and bear the CE marking. RISE is a Notified Body under the Regulation. We carry out the assessments required to verify that your product complies with the applicable regulatory requirements.

Purpose/Benefit:

With RISE, you receive an independent and recognized basis for CE marking of personal protective equipment (PPE). We assess both the product and the technical documentation, issue the necessary certificates, and guide you through the entire process.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is equipment designed to be worn or used by an individual to protect against risks to health and safety.

Examples of personal protective equipment include:

Harmonised Standards

Harmonised standards are available for many types of personal protective equipment (PPE). If your product is designed and assessed in accordance with a harmonised standard, you can demonstrate compliance with the applicable requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

If harmonised standards are not used, RISE can help develop an evaluation plan and verify that the product meets the relevant requirements of the Regulation.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):
  • EU Type Examination (Module B)

You submit an application and the technical documentation to RISE. We review the documentation and assess the product against the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

If the product meets the applicable requirements, RISE issues an EU Type Examination Certificate. The certificate is normally valid for five years.

  • Assessment of Finished Products (Module C2)

For Category III personal protective equipment (PPE), ongoing surveillance is required after the EU Type Examination Certificate has been issued. RISE carries out sampling and testing of finished products to verify their continued conformity with the approved type.

The results are documented in an assessment report. When the requirements are met, you may use RISE’s identification number as a Notified Body alongside the CE marking.

  • Quality System Assessment (Module D)

As an alternative to Module C2, you may choose Module D. Under this procedure, RISE assesses your quality management system for production, final inspection, and testing.

Following a successful assessment, a Production Quality Assurance Certificate is issued. The certificate entitles you to use RISE’s identification number as a Notified Body alongside the CE marking.

Electronic products in railway vehicles

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Electronic products in railway vehicles Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

Investigation of products according to EN 45545-2 - Railway applications - Requirements for fire behaviour of materials and components.
Subclause 4.3 - Grouping rules.

Purpose/Benefit:

Table 2 of EN 45545-2 lists the most common products for trains. Table 3 is for products that are not listed in Table 2 but are of a simpler design with few constituent materials or components. For more complex products such as electronic equipment consisting of a variety of materials and components, there are no clear requirements in EN 45545-2. For these products, an investigation is required to find out what needs to be tested in order for the product as a whole to be classifiable. The investigation follows the flow chart for grouping rules found in subclause 4.3 of the standard.

Each of the product's constituent materials/components must be handled in the flow chart. There are some rules to consider when it comes to the exposed surface, weight and and also distance.

A material or component weighing up to 10 g which is not in direct contact with any other material or component non-approved according to EN 45545-2 need not to be tested or grouped.

  • A group is defined as materials/components that are within 200 mm in vertical direction and 20 mm in horizontal direction of each other
  • Up to 100 g (interior) or 400 g (exterior) of combustibles are allowed per group with no requirements
  • Up to 500 g (interior) or 2000 g (exterior) of combustibles per group are allowed which are approved according to requirement set R24 (EN ISO 4589-2)
  • Combustibles in groups weighing more than 500 g (interior) or 2000 g (exterior) have to fulfil requirement set R22 (interior) eller R23 (exterior) (EN ISO 4589-2, EN ISO 5659-2, NF X 70-100-1 & -2 or EN 17084)

Above rules apply to groups but also to individual materials/components that have an exposed surface area of less than 0.2 m2.

An exposed surface area larger than 0.2 m2 means fulfilment according to requirement set R1 (interior) or R7 (exterior) (ISO 5658-2, ISO 5660-1, EN ISO 5659-2+toxicity (EN 45545-2, annex C or EN 17084).

An alternative to the above investigation procedure is that the product meets any of the requirements as set out in 4.2 h in EN 45545-2. Here, among other options, is the opportunity to place the product in a technical cabinet that is protected by some kind of extinguishing system. Such a solution can mean that the product is approved to install without testing.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

An investigation means that the product is weighed and measured and then taken apart to the greatest extent possible. The constituent materials/components are weighed and, if relevant, the distance between these materials/components is measures as well as the exposed surface area.

A report describes the conditions for approval of the product and has a summary, at the end, of what is needed in terms of testing, if any, for a possible classification of the product. The product and all its constituent materials/components are photographed on a scale where the weight is visible. These photos are included in the report together with a table listing the constituent materials/components and the applicable requirements according to EN 45545-2.

Colour fastness to artificial light according to SS-EN ISO 105-B02

Name of service (page headline, shown in promos – maximum of 70 characters incl. spaces): Colour fastness to artificial light according to SS-EN ISO 105-B02 Lead (include SEO-words and the main benefits for your target groups. Stick to one paragraph, maximum 2-3 sentences):

This standard describes a method for determining the impact of light on colors in textile materials of all kinds.

Purpose/Benefit:

Textile materials are exposed to varying degrees of light damage, both visible light and UV light. By testing the color fastness to light, one can quickly check if the wrong dyes have been used. Testing at an early stage can help avoid complaints.

Method (what/which methods are used to perform the service):

Exposure is performed in an apparatus producing artificial light corresponding to sunlight through window glass.

The most common way to assess color fastness is to expose reference fabrics with known color fastness in parallel with the test material.  These fabrics are graded from 1 to 8 where 8 is the best.

The result of the exposure is the reference number (1-8) whose color change corresponds to the color change of the test material.

Alternatively, one can expose a known sample i parallel with the test material and assess wheather the test material is equally good. A

It is also possible to expose a certain time or amount of light and evaluate the color change against a grayscale with a scale from 1 to 5 where 5 is the best.

Delivery (what does the client get after performed service – e.g. a report, certificate etc.):

One report in Swedish or English with obtained results.
