Physical and comfort-related testing

Ensure how textiles perform in real-use, skin-close microclimates. We evaluate properties such as moisture transport, thermal insulation, pressure distribution, air permeability, water repellency (spray test and Bundesmann) and more. Using advanced equipment, we simulate realistic use scenarios and provide objective data on comfort and functionality.

Mechanical testing

Evaluate strength, durability and performance. Textiles are subjected to tensile, tear, seam and bursting tests (CRE), abrasion testing (Martindale), pilling and snagging assessments. We measure how materials withstand mechanical stress over time and under different conditions — essential for product development, procurement and claims investigations.

Colour fastness

Predict how textiles change over time. Colour change and staining are common causes of customer complaints. We test colour fastness to washing, light, perspiration, water, migration and rubbing, tailored to the product’s intended use.

Simulated ageing

Validate lifespan and protective performance. We simulate ageing through repeated washing cycles, light exposure, abrasion or seawater exposure to assess durability and long-term functionality.

Flame resistance testing

Evaluate textile behaviour in fire situations. Fire testing is primarily used for textiles in transportation, public environments and protective equipment, as well as apparel, bedding and interior products. We assess ignition behaviour, flame spread and self-extinguishing properties.

Chemical analysis

Identify hazardous substances and protect consumers and the environment. With advanced instrumentation, we detect substances such as carcinogenic and allergenic dyes, PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols, heavy metals, siloxanes, quinoline, ADCA and UV stabilisers. Testing supports compliance with regulations such as REACH, particularly important for children’s products and skin-contact materials.

OEKO-TEX® certification

Strengthen your brand with globally recognised certification. RISE is an OEKO-TEX® institute authorised to certify according to STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD, MADE IN GREEN, STeP and ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX®. Certification demonstrates chemical control, transparency and responsible production practices.

Tailored analyses and methods

Develop solutions for unique requirements. Our experts adapt or develop test methods to meet specific product, material or application needs that may not be covered by existing standards.

innovation support for a sustainable, circular textile value chain

The textile industry is facing its largest transformation ever. From 2026, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will introduce new sustainability requirements for all textile products on the European market. At the same time, investors and consumers are demanding documented climate and environmental performance.

Companies that fail to adapt risk losing market access as the new EU requirements take effect. With requirements for digital product passports, extended producer responsibility and stricter chemical regulations, the textile industry is undergoing its most significant transformation in decades.

Division: Division Materials and Industry

This project lays the foundation for circular solutions for mixed textiles, which is a major barrier to textile recycling. It maps current flows and challenges in Sweden, while engaging industry players in both Sweden and the Nordic countries to ensure relevance and market adaptation. Innovative methods for separation and recycling are tested, along with new applications that valorize mixtures into high-value products such as insulation and filtration materials. Prototypes and demonstrators provide concrete evidence of technical feasibility, while life cycle assessments quantify environmental and cost benefits compared to current practices. By combining system insights, industry engagement and technical trials, the project delivers the knowledge and tools needed to scale up future recycling pathways for textile mixtures, reduce waste, create value and accelerate the transition to a circular textile economy.

Project goals

The project aims to increase the share of secondary raw materials and reuse of textiles at a time when global resources are becoming increasingly limited and both consumers and authorities are placing higher demands on reducing the environmental impact of textile production. By developing new technologies and business models for recycling and reuse of textile blends, the project wants to contribute to a more resource-efficient and sustainable textile industry in the Nordic region. The challenge of increasing the share of secondary raw materials and reused textiles is particularly relevant at a time when global resources are becoming increasingly limited and there is growing pressure from both consumers and authorities to reduce the negative environmental impact of textile production. Although a small proportion of textiles are recycled today, there is significant potential to develop and implement new technologies and business models that can increase the share of recycled and reused textiles, which would contribute to creating a more resource-efficient and sustainable textile industry. This study acts as a catalyst for system change in how textile blends can be developed and utilized. It creates direct and indirect value for SMEs by providing access to knowledge, unlocking innovation opportunities and enabling them to contribute to and benefit from a more sustainable and competitive textile industry in the Nordic region. By mapping the challenges and opportunities of mixed textiles (textile mix) in the Nordic region, the study can provide a unified framework for understanding how textile mixes behave, are processed and can be recycled or reused. This shared knowledge is crucial for adapting innovation efforts, regulations and sustainability standards across borders. In addition, the project results can also contribute in the long term to the development of common standards or certifications for mixed textiles.
