Master Thesis: Smart, Attack-Resistant IoT Networks with UWB

We are looking for a dedicated master’s student to join us in a thesis project provided in collaboration between Connected Intelligence Unit at RISE and ASSA ABLOY GTT.

About us
The Connected Intelligence Unit is part of RISE Computer Science. The research focus is on the Internet of Things. Among the group's key technologies are the Contiki operating system, uIP stack, ContikiRPL, SICSLoWPAN, 6TiSCH and lightweight implementation of IPsec and DTLS.

The unit conducts projects together with industry and academic partners from Sweden and across the world. ASSA ABLOY is the global leader in door opening solutions, dedicated to satisfying end-user needs for security, safety and convenience. We currently consist of around 190 employees. You will be working in the Pre-Product Innovation (PPI) division of ASSA ABLOY GTT. Here we apply different wireless technologies (Z-Wave, WiFi, proprietary 802.15.4, ZigBee, etc.) and positioning technologies to new products aimed for large-scale deployments in real buildings. We are also working and have founded the UWB positioning standard for seamless access.

Thesis Description
The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to enable applications of utmost societal value, such as energy-efficient buildings, smart cities, intelligent grids, and next-generation healthcare. These applications require sensor data and actuation commands to be delivered in a timely fashion with high reliability, while the battery-powered devices must often last for years. The challenge is to make IoT networks maintain their functionality not only under benign circumstances but also in more challenging situations; for example, when IoT networks are under attack or exposed to harsh radio environments and cross-technology interference.  The goal of this thesis is to contribute to more robust IoT communications and more secure provisioning of devices using multiple radios and ultra-wide-band ranging technology. The application area is doors and locks and the IoT devices corresponds to wirelessly connected battery powered locks.

The positioning/UWB in combination with mesh and BLE can be used for other things also, we would like to study:

Alt 1.) One of the challenging things is to have an easy installation of wireless products. Today the lock smiths think wireless interconnectivity is very difficult because they do not have good tools for diagnostics. One such very interesting diagnostic tool is to have a QoS heat map. In this thesis work we would like to explore the possibility be able to scan in a QoS heat map by help of UWB/positioning.

Alt 2.) One idea is to do ranging between the locks and add reference points and other things to position the locks automatically into a floorplan without extra positioning anchors. Smartphones could also be possible to positioning by help of the locks. This makes it also possible monitor the locks and smartphones position. In this way it could be possible to increase the security in a building. In this thesis work we would like to explore the possibility be able to monitor positioning of locks and smartphones in a building by help of UWB/positioning. We would like to understand the performance and its limitations.

Who are you?
We expect you to have good programming skills in embedded, low-level C, ideally experience with the Contiki operating system. An interest in security, practical knowledge in machine learning and hardware skills are considered a plus.
