Welcome to RISE Smart Hardware in Norrköping. In close collaboration with Linköping University, we can offer you diploma work in our exciting R&D environment. During the project work you will be a part of our team at RISE and will be supported by supervisors both from RISE and LIU throughout the project. Most of the practical laboratory work will be carried out in our facility Printed Electronics Arena (www.printedelectronicsarena.com) in Norrköping.

Background
Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is becoming an integral component of product development in the electronics industry. Consumers want to know the environmental impacts of the electronic products they purchase, ranging from their carbon dioxide footprint and energy efficiency to end-of-life considerations and recyclability. Sustainability of electronic products is also high on the agenda of policy makers who want to guarantee a safe, sustainable and secure future for their constituents.

Laser-induced graphitization (LIG) is a method of converting a carbon-rich precursor into a highly conductive graphite-like carbon by laser scribing. This method has shown great promise as a versatile and low-cost patterning technique. The use of forest-based materials opens the possibility of producing green and sustainable electronics. In this project an ink based on cellulose and lignin is patterned using screen printing followed by laser graphitization. Screen printing is one of the most commonly used manufacturing techniques of printed electronics, making this approach compatible with existing processing of various devices. Pre-patterning of the ink enables carbon patterns without residual precursor between the patterns.

Scope
This diploma work comprises of:

  • Understanding the basics of LIG and printed electronics
  • Defining the scope of the study
  • Making a list of the environmental inputs and outputs with the help of a researcher from RISE and making a suitable model
  • Doing a life cycle impact assessment
  • Interpretation of the results
  • Presenting the finding to internal and possibly external audiences

Student Profile
You have an interest in environment, electronics and/or science. You should be MSc student in the fields of environment, electronics engineering, physics, materials science, or related subject. You have experience in LCA and have used one or more LCA software.

You need to be enthusiastic, curious, and keen to develop your skills, enjoy working in a dynamic international team and with good communication skills. Excellent language skills in spoken and written (scientific and technical) Swedish and English are a strong plus.   

Project preference

  • The work can start from fall 2022 (flexible arrangement possible).
  • The duration of this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) in agreement with your thesis advisor at your university.

Alternative project structures:

  • This project can also be done as part of a course work in a university with fewer academic credits.
  • This project can also be done in groups of students.
