RISE is an independent, state-owned research institute. Our mission is to strive for sustainable growth in Sweden by strengthening the competitiveness and capacity for renewal of Swedish industry, as well as promoting the innovative development of society as a whole.
Our mission is stated in the Swedish government research bill for research and innovation:
“The overarching goal of the institutes within RISE is for them to be internationally competitive and promote sustainable growth in Sweden by strengthening the competitiveness and innovation of trade and industry, as well as promote the innovation and capabilities of the public sector to contribute to solutions to societal challenges in concert with trade and industry.”

Our mission is specified in owner instructions and in the various goals we receive from our owner and Board of Directors. In the owner instructions and goals emphasize the importance of our:
- conducting research of high quality
- promoting and developing collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector
- supporting innovative development in small and medium-sized companies
- running testbeds that are highly relevant to industry
RISE is one of 46 companies that is fully or partly owned by the Swedish state. We are also one of the 22 state-owned companies with a specifically decided social mission. It means that the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) has decided that these companies, fully or partially, must generate other effects than direct profits to the Treasury. RISE does not, for example, distribute profits. Instead, the profits it generates are invested in developing the business.
Our purpose – new solutions for a sustainable future
The government's mandate defines the framework for our operations. However, we are also a purpose-driven organisation. The purpose is based on our mission and it puts our organisation and the work that we do each day into a larger context, which we share with our employees, customers and partners. It is a driving force that unites us, but also guides us and helps us focus and prioritise.
