Recycled concrete aggregates in climate-neutral structural applications

Reinforced concrete beams from a demolished bridge in Sweden are used to produce recycled aggregate. The recycled aggregate will be processed and added in different fractions to an established concrete mix. Experimental investigations at both the material and structural levels will be conducted to gain an understanding of the mechanical properties.

Aim and goal

This project aims to investigate the impact of fractions of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) on the global structural behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) components in transport infrastructure.

Challenge

The challenges faced by this project are to reduce raw aggregate material extraction, CDW deposition to landfills, associated costs, environmental damage and CO2 emissions.

Solution

A direct impact of this project is related to giving a second life to materials sourced from a demolished structure. This, in turn, is coupled to the responsible use of material resources used, which is prioritized where public investments are concerned, i.e. in transport infrastructure.

Effect

The project will bring forth the potential of using RCA in a recycled concrete product in structures which is considered to be a responsible use of resources and an innovative product development compared to the current use of RCA as a “reused material”.
