Expertises in the capture, storage and utilization of carbon dioxide

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) for strong emission reductions or negative emissions or Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) for sustainable carbon-based products for the industrial and transport sectors are areas that have grown stronger in recent years and are important building blocks in the transition towards climate-neutral societies.

RISE experts within CCS/CCU offer actors in both business and society e.g

  • economic assessments and comparisons between different technology tracks
  • evaluations of climate benefits and other environmental and sustainability assessments
  • studies of how different technologies can be integrated into host facilities (cogeneration plants and industrial facilities) for energy and cost-effecient carbon dioxide separation/conversion
  • studies of infrastructure and logistics arrangements for carbon dioxide
  • investigation and evaluation of suitable storage locations
  • support regarding the design of effecient policy instruments and analyzes of the impact of various policy instruments on different technologies and actors
  • summaries of the state of knowledge

Through our mobile pilot plants, there is also the opportunity to develop and demonstrate techniques for the separation, processing and conversion of carbon dioxide.

RISE operations in the (BE)CCS/U area covers the entire value chain (capture, purification and processing, storage and conversion of carbon dioxide into various products), both with regard to the large point emissions of biogenic carbon dioxide and for CCS/CCU in biochemical and thermochemical conversion of biomass, and includes competences regarding different system levels from the development of technologies for separation, processing and conversion of carbon dioxide to system studies including process integration, techno-economic assessments, sustainability analyzes as well as policy instruments and markets.

RISE key competencies in the field of (BE)CCS/CCU include:

  • Development of (new) materials and processes for carbon capture
    • Carbon capture and storage with residues from industry
    • Carbon capture with alternative sorbents (adsorbents and absorbents)
    • Material development for carbon capture from distributed carbon dioxide sources
    • Corrosion
  • Development of chemical processes for the conversion of carbon dioxide
    • Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide
    • Thermochemical conversion of carbon dioxide
  • Development of concepts for CCS/CCU in the field of biochemical processes
    • CCS/CCU at biogas plants
    • Distribution and handling of carbon dioxide
    • Biological methanation
    • Gas fermentation
  • Transport and storage of carbon dioxide
    • Infrastructure and logistics setup for carbon dioxide
    • Geological storage of carbon dioxide
  • System analysis within CCS/CCU
    • Modeling, process integration, techno-economic and environmental assessments of CCS/CCU
    • Policy instruments and markets
