Surface analysis and characterisation - an instrument workshop

A one-day workshop on surface analysis and characterisation instruments. During the day you will have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with a range of techniques.

Understanding surface properties and material structure is crucial in research, product development, quality control and troubleshooting in many industries – from medical devices and packaging to energy, textiles and electronics. This workshop gives you a unique opportunity to learn the basics of some of the most powerful analytical methods in materials science.

During the visits to the RISE laboratories, you will be given a short introduction to each technique by our specialists and the opportunity to see the instruments in practice. At the end of the day, you will have a clearer picture of how these analytical methods can support your company or organisation in research, product and process development and troubleshooting.

This workshop is intended for engineers, laboratory staff and scientists involved in the research, development or quality control of products for which surface or interface properties have a major impact on product performance.

The workshop will be held in english.

Programme

This workshop provides an overview of techniques for analysing surface tension, wettability, chemical composition, surface structure and friction. Through theory and demonstrations, instruments such as tensiometers, AFM, SEM/EDX, XPS, etc. are introduced with a focus on material surface properties and structure.

Workshop Content
During the workshop, you will be introduced to a wide range of advanced analytical techniques used to study material surfaces and structures. Both the theoretical principles and practical applications of the following methods will be covered:

  • Tensiometer – surface tension, wettability and absorption
  • XPS/ESCA – chemical composition via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
  • AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) – surface topography, imaging and surface interactions
  • Contact angle measurements – wettability of fibres, powders and surfaces
  • FTIR imaging – chemical imaging using infrared spectroscopy
  • Profilometer – measurement of surface topography
  • SEM/EDX/ESEM – scanning electron microscopy with chemical analysis and surface structure characterisation
  • Force Board – measurement of tactile friction
  • Confocal Raman Spectroscopy – chemical composition and imaging
  • QCM-D - Adsorption/Desorption on surfaces
  • SAXS/WAXS – Materials structure
Testimonials

I got a good overview of the different technologies available. The information was presented in a way that made it easy to assess whether the technology could be useful in my work.
