Contact TommyRISE has extensive and interdisciplinary expertise in wood production, covering the industrial processes that convert raw materials into refined wood products, with sawmills as the hub of the value chain. The field is developing rapidly through digitalization, energy efficiency improvements, and increased circularity.
The wood industry is facing a new reality: raw materials will not become cheaper, and availability will not increase. To meet future demands for sustainability, competitiveness, and climate responsibility, the industry must create more value from raw materials. This requires a shift to production systems that can handle more tree species, residual flows, and recycled materials, while also being energy-efficient and data-driven.
Today's sawmill processes are often optimized for a narrow material flow, which limits adaptability. The lack of digital traceability and real-time data also makes it difficult to make informed decisions. Meeting these challenges requires technological development, new business models, and close collaboration between industry, research, and policy.
RISE has extensive and interdisciplinary expertise in wood production, for example in sawmill processes, drying, sorting, material characterization, and digitization.
In the field of timber drying, RISE offers research, development, and training, as well as advanced simulation tools such as Torksim and Torksim LC to optimize energy use and drying quality.
When it comes to sorting and quality assessment, RISE has extensive experience in both visual and automatic appearance sorting of sawn timber, where measurement data and customized sorting rules are used to maximize the value of each piece of wood. To further improve resource utilization, RISE is working with real-time material characterization, where technologies such as NIR, laser scanning, and computer vision enable analysis of wood properties directly on the production line.
Digitalization is another key area, where RISE is developing solutions for traceability and decision support using AI and image analysis. This creates transparency in the value chain and gives the industry better conditions for making data-driven decisions, reducing waste, and increasing flexibility in production.
By combining cutting-edge technical expertise with applied research, RISE is helping to shape the regenerative wood industry of the future - sustainable, efficient, and digitally integrated.
