Recording on Paper

One of our specialties is evaluation of recording on paper. Testing of properties of importance for the permanence of the recording have been performed at RISE (former SP) since the beginning of the twentieth century. When new recording techniques have been introduced on the market, the testing methods have been modified in order to evaluate new properties. RISE has taken a major role in the development of an international standard for recording on paper - ISO 11798. All types of recording are covered by the standard such as printing, copying, handwriting and machine writing.

Purpose

The standard ISO 11798 has its origin in the test methods and view on permanence that has been used in Sweden for many years.

The foundation of ISO 11798 is that it should be possible to read a document now and in the future. It should be possible to copy, scan and perform microfilming on documents that has been exposed to light, water, handling and storing for a long time. There are also requirements stating that the recording should not have a negative impact on the mechanical properties of the documents.

The standard includes the following requirements

  • Appearance
  • Lightfastness
  • Water resistance
  • Transfer of recording
  • Resistance to wear
  • Resistance to heat
  • Effects of recording on mechanical properties of the paper

ISO 11798 also specifies what type of paper that should be used for testing and how the samples should look like.

Method

The permanence and durability of paper documents prepared in copying machines, laser printers and other types of printers are evaluated in accordance with the Swedish National Archives Regulations (RA-FS 2006:4) which refer to ISO 11798. RISE is the only certifier that has been accredited by SWEDAC for testing of ISO 11798.

The Swedish National Archive has determined that ISO 11798 meets their demands and products that has been tested according to that standard can be certified by RISE.

Recordings that meet the requirements of ISO 11798 can be preserved for many years if stored in a suitable environment.  If there are high requirements on lightfastness of the recording the standard is not enough since it allows the colors to change with time if the information remains.

Deliveries

A test report, and a certificate if the product is approved, which can be used as a guarantee for archival durability and permanence
