SoS Arena

The digital transformation of society means that more and more systems are connected to each other. To better understand how such systems-of-systems (SoS) should be designed, RISE together with ICT Sweden is making a strategic investment to strengthen knowledge in the field.

Systems-of-systems (SoS) are becoming more common in society as a result of the digital transformation. Simply put, an SoS is a situation where different independent systems are connected to solve problems that none of the systems can handle on their own. The area has become increasingly relevant in many different application areas, such as transport, crisis management and defense, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, etc. However, existing tools and methods for developing SoS are insufficient, and therefore RISE together with ICT Sweden makes a three-year investment that aims to build knowledge in the field and establish RISE as a leading international research organization.

The project consists of four thematic areas:

  1. Distributed digital twins. Digital twins are a virtual representation of a system's structure and current state. In SoS, each participating system potentially has its own digital twin, and there are challenges around how these can be synchronized and used to support different development and operational processes.
  2. DevOps architecture. DevOps is about bringing the processes of development (Dev) and operation (Ops) closer together to enable rapid evolution. In SoS, each participating system potentially has its own DevOps process and these must be synchronized with each other and the organizations must be made to share data with each other.
  3. Intelligent collaborative systems. As the use of AI in the participating systems increases, they must also learn to collaborate with each other, and there are many challenges that go beyond today's focus on machine learning for classification.
  4. Resilient collaborations. In order for us to be able to trust SoS, they must be safe towards their environment and be able to resist attempts at manipulation. Therefore, both methods for risk analysis and technical solutions are needed to respond to threats.

In addition, the project is developing a testbed consisting of cloud-based software for distributed simulation and testing of SoS.
