System Dynamics Simulation and Participatory Modelling

Dynamic simulation modelling offers a unique and valuable perspective for decision support in an increasingly complex world.

Value proposition of dynamic modelling processes:

Complex systems are made up of many interconnected variables. These interconnections make it challenging to understand how to solve systemic problems where causes and effects are unclear. Looking at the data alone can lead to misleading correlations. System dynamics focuses on understanding the cause-and-effect structure creating problematic performance. Once built, they are used to test interventions to uncover counterintuitive responses of the system, and design more effective solutions using fx. uncertainty analysis.

These models are visual, which makes them easier to interpret by non-experts and makes clear what data and assumptions are used to drive model output. Higher transparency makes it possible to involve different actors in the modelling process and produce results which are truly trans-disciplinary.

Model the system, not only the data

Since system dynamic models are based on variable relationships, instead of data alone, they can be applied to many different topics and at different scales. These models are particularly useful for developing scenarios for long time-horizons. Bringing groups together to solve trans-disciplinary problems and handle resource allocation conflicts can be enabled by trained facilitators/modellers in combination with the visual modelling tools. RISE researchers have used SD modelling to address trade-offs for water resource management with municipalities and regions, renewable energy value chains and policy effects, and resource flows within industrial symbiosis networks.

RISE experts support the analysis of complex systems through:

  • Model development and reporting of results.

  • Facilitated workshops to co-develop simulation models and build relationships among actors.

  • Create customised simulation platforms for decision support and dissemination purposes.

What can you expect from working with RISE:

  • Problem-oriented approach to analysing complexity that ensures results are useful and easily interpreted.

  • Experienced facilitators that can design workshops to be both productive and engaging.

  • Structured engagement strategies that bring together different opinions and support identification of satisficing solutions.
