Corrosion in aqueous environments

Many structures are exposed to water during use: water pipes and connectors, cooling-water systems, condensers, ships, etc.

Decisive factors for corrosivity in water include dissolved oxygen content, pH, temperature, flow rate, and content of Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Cl- och SO42-. In addition, microbial growth and biocides added to the liquid medium to guard against organic acids created by microbial growth also influence the rate of corrosion.

In acidic and strongly alkaline media, stainless steels and titanium alloys are often used. Problems associated with corrosion often differ markedly from one solution to the next and knowledge of how the material is affected by the environment, and how this knowledge can be tested and evaluated, is therefore necessary. The use of new biofuels also presents new problems with respect to materials.

What we can offer

We are engaged in research and development activities in all three areas: water, process solutions and biofuels. We have well-equipped laboratories for electro-mechanical measurement and stress corrosion measurement, as well as specially adapted corrosion testing equipment for high-temperature and pressure and explosion-proof equipment.
