From Woodchips to Aircraft in Småland – developing a regional value chain for aviation biofuels

06 December 2018, 12:50

The market for aviation biofuel is currently underdeveloped, with commercial production almost nonexistent. In a bid to increase access to renewable aviation fuels, KLM, Södra, Växjö Municipality, Växjö Energi, SkyNRG, Småland Airport, Fores, Luleå University of Technology and RISE have combined to conduct a joint feasibility study into the conditions for aviation biofuel production in Småland. The Swedish Energy Agency has decided to support the project.

The feasibility study, From Woodchips to Aircraft in Småland, will identify and develop the most efficient system for a functioning value chain for aviation biofuel production in Småland. RISE will be managing the project, which will be jointly financed and staffed by the involved parties.

“Sweden has a unique opportunity to take the lead in resource-efficient production of aviation biofuels based on sustainable waste streams available within the forestry and paper manufacturing industries. The project consortium is comprised of stakeholders from throughout the value chain and at RISE we are very much looking forward to contributing our own knowledge and expertise at a systems level in order to expedite development,” says Johanna Mossberg, focus area manager for fossil-free transport at RISE.

The project will run until 30 June 2019 and includes technical inventory, analysis of raw materials and integration potential, techno-economic analysis of local production and analyses of demand and distribution, business models and communications. The project has a budget of approximately SEK 4.1 million, of which SEK 2.6 million comes from the Swedish Energy Agency.

RISE conducts a number of projects for sustainable aviation, including the innovation cluster Fossil-free Aviation 2045 and a project with, among others, Luleå University of Technology to produce and test-fly aviation biofuel based on Swedish forestry waste.
